Great Product, Not So Great Directions

I did not actually buy this product from Amazon, but I wanted to review it here for others as I find the reviews extremely helpful.We have a convertible crib that we recently converted from crib to the toddler bed. Like a lot of kids, our son moves a lot in his sleep. Even though the bed was 6-8 in off the ground, I was worried he'd fall out of bed anyway. At first we intended to buy a regular bed rail, knowing at some point we'll get a twin bed for his room. However, some reviews I read specifically mentioned that those rails would not fit a toddler bed or a convertible crib, and I was worried they'd be too long for the toddler bed anyway.Once it was assembled, it was very easy to install onto the bed. A great feature is that the rail itself snaps in and out of the brackets easily, so it can be removed in seconds to change the sheets, etc. It fits the bed well and there aren't any gaps or movement of the rail for anything to get caught in.The directions, however, are lacking. There is a diagram on the first page listing all the parts and labeling them as A, B, C, etc. The actual directions are on the next page (like a book) and say something like "Connect Bed Rail A to Bracket B" so I kept having to flip back and forth to determine what part I was working with and where it was going etc. There are no drawings accompanying the directions themselves and I found the directions, while somewhat detailed, were still confusing. We got it all together and then determined, while installing it on the bed, that we'd put the brackets in backwards so we had to take them out. That was kind of a pain b/c they snap together sort of like tent poles, with the holes and the buttons to press down to "release" and the release part was hard. We had to use a screwdriver to get it to release.I think that these directions really, really need to have pictures with each step b/c it was very difficult to know if we were putting things together correctly (which we did not, apparently!) Once it's together, it's very easy to put on the bed itself.The other comment I have is that our crib/bed has 3 mattress levels. We had the mattress on the very lowest level and then when we converted the bed to the toddler bed and put the rail on, we actually had to raise the mattress back to the middle level. It's hard to explain here but the product has a strap that connects to the opposite side of the mattress, and then you tighten it. Then it also has this rectangular bar structure that is supposed to lay flat on the mattress, with the brackets for the rail resting on the outside/other side of the mattress. With the mattress in the lowest position, the bar structure was laying at an angle - basically the bracket side higher than the spring part of the bed b/c the brackets were resting on the outside rail of the bed, so we raised the mattress back to the middle level so the bar would rest flat against the mattress spring base.

fits convertible cribs, but wood is not sealed and it should be

This was the only rail we found that would fit our convertible cribs and seems to be safe. From that perspective it is a great product. My disappointment with it is that the manufacturer left it to each and every customer to deal with the unfinished wood on their own.The wood is completely unfinished and it comes with manufacturing dust on it. The moment we wiped it with a lightly damp cloth, the grain in the unfinished wood raised up and we had to sand it. We had to order non-toxic urethane just for this rail because non-toxic urethane is not carried in any of the local hardware stores, and then we had to stay up nights to do all the work of sanding, painting, sanding, painting ....This product is completely unusable without a finish on it. A toddler who tends to chew things would quickly end up with a rough rail that snags his clothes and scrapes his skin, and the unfinished rail is impossible to clean if a kid throws up on it.It is not a good product if every single customer has to go through all the trouble of ordering non-toxic finish and sanding and finishing it themselves. This is the sort of thing that can be quickly and cheaply done at the factory. The manufacturer should have offered a finish as an option.

Best Bed Rail Ever

I got this for my 2.5 year old daughter. She is tiny thing- like 25 lbs- and I was concerned about her crib being too high, etc. this rail is perfect for those that have a PLATFORM bottom crib instead of springs. Below is my feed back:PROS:1. her crib is the honey color in the picture and the rail looks great2. Some reviews stated that the natural wood concerned them and that it could give splinters- NOT TRUE. This wood is natural and, yes, unfinished but it is sanded and VERY smooth. I have no worries at all about it splinters.3. perfect height. my daughter has a memory foam topper on her mattress and it still is high enough not to let her have any problems.4. easy to assemble5. Our crib has a wood platform bottom and I had problems finding a rail that did not need to hook to a spring bottom. This is perfect! It tightens to the mattress, not a spring bottomCONS:1. The instructions stink!!

Great Fun Bed!!

We just bought this bed for our 2 year old son who loved his crib. Well, one night in this bed and he loves it. The first night he kept climbing out of the bed and walking around the house, but the second night he slept all the way through. The bed is great with a crib mattress because the sides are high enough that he doesn't role out. Shipping is out of control but JcPenneys had the bed for the same price as the store near us and we got it sooner.Great Bed, lots of fun.

Our one year-old son adores this bed. He had only slept about 3 nights soundly through the night in his crib. He's been in this bed for 5 nights now and he's slept through each one! He is walking and runs into his room and jumps on the thing. It was very easy to put together and looks fantastic. We highly recommend this bed.

Tough enough to survive a hurricane!

We bought this bed seven months ago for our son's first birthday. He loves this bed. Three months ago the bed became covered with water, ceiling, and insulation, thanks to a hurricane. The mattress was the only part of bed that had to be replaced. It has been wonderful for us to have the option to use a crib mattress or twin mattress as we could not afford to purchase a new mattress at the same time as we purchased the bed. We liked being able to apply the stickers ourselves as we have left off ones we didn't like and added some custom vinyl decals that we had made just for our son.

Totally disappointed in this product. It was advertised as a toddler sheet and pillowcase but contained a standard size pillowcase, not toddler size. The information provided for the product was inadequate. Fabric for the sheet and pillowcase appears to be low quality. The crib sheet is only partially elasticized. If it wasn't so much trouble, I would return it. I've learned a lesson when it comes to dealing with small, individual sellers. I do not recommend this product.

fantastic product--sturdy, simple, folds down completely

I spend a lot of time looking at and comparing products before I buy one--especially when it comes to baby/toddler safety products. I looked at almost all the other bed rails before purchasing this one, and I'm thrilled with it.First of all, it's very easy to assemble and install. It took my husband about 5 to 10 minutes to put everything together. He said it was easy. The system used for making sure the bed rail doesn't push out from the side of the bed is a very simple strap system that installs quickly, even with our new heavy, super-plush twin beds. Once installed, the bed rail doesn't budge an inch. Also, the mechanism for folding the bedrail down (completely down!) when you want to make a bed is very easy...just slip the lock to the side, and then use a hand on each side of the bedrail to lift and fold--easy for adults, but not at all obvious for kids. When you're done making the bed, just fold the rail back up and it clicks itself into place.Second, it looks great. It's clean, crisp white--not some of the other glaring colors I've seen in other bed rails. It's very tall (perfect for the thick mattresses sold these days), and very long. We keep it in the upright position once the bed is made, but it's simple enough to fold that you could keep it folded down and more out of sight when the bed is made.Third (and maybe this should have been second ;), it's safe. Very safe. We're using it with our two five-year olds, and the height of it is perfect for them. I don't think they could roll or push themselves out of bed if they tried. The frame is very sturdy. It comes with a bar that goes through the middle of the mesh (covered and padded, of course). It's removeable if you want (or if your bed is too thick), but we keep it in because it seems to add even more sturdiness and strength.I couldn't be happier with this product. All of the others I looked at seemed to be either a mess to install, or they didn't fold down, or they looked awful. This one was great on all three counts!

Beware: Day 2 w/ Rails and She's Already Fallen Out

I bought two of these for my three year old, who we were transitioning from her crib to her "big girl" bed. We got one for each side of the bed. They were easy to assemble, looked nice (for bed rails), and were easy to fold down. The only issue for us in assembly and general operation is that they are so tall in height that when we fold them down they do not lie flat against the side of the bed because the height of the rail is taller than the space from the floor to the hinge on the rail.When we assembled the products, there was an additional metal bar included (you can see it in the picture of the product at the height of the mattress top), which the instructions clearly state is not to be used unless you have an unusally tall mattress. Otherwise, you are told to omit the bar. We do not have an unusually tall mattress (the instructions gave a specific height and we missed it by several inches) so we omitted the bar.Last night was my daughter's first night sleeping in her bed and all went well. Tonight, however, I heard the frightening thunk of my daughter hitting the hardwood, followed immediately by her cries. It appears she slipped between the upper bar and without the additional bar the mesh was inadequate to hold her on the bed.Thankfully, she seems fine. I located the metal bars that were supposedly only for the tall mattresses and inserted them immediately because I do not think there would be a way for her to slip out with those installed. Please beware when assembling this product to consider including these rails even if you do not have a tall mattress.

We like it so far!

We've had this rail for just over a week now. My son just moved into a "big boy bed" and I did a ton of research into which rail would be best for us. This one seemed to fit the bill. We have a mattress/boxspring combo so happily didn't have the issues that the people with platforms etc have in picking a rail.It's certainly sturdy and with that middle stabilizer bar in place, doesn't move ANYwhere near enough to let him fall through. I cannot imagine how kids are going through to the floor if this is installed correctly and using that middle bar.Some pros and cons below. Don't be fooled by that it seems like there's more cons than pros. Not true. I'm just wordier with my complaints. Pros:--It's sturdy and nice-looking. We DID install that middle bar as other reviewers recommended. I definitely think it's a good idea. I can't see how it's as stable without it.--You can lower it down to make changing sheets etc super easy. I love this. I also lower it when sitting in the rocker next to the bed telling a story or singing to him - otherwise I can't see him, nor he me! It's also mercifully quiet when you raise it back up and snap it into place. I have a SUPER light sleeper and he doesn't stir when I do that.--The mechanism to lower it works smoothly and well, and I can't find a way that a child, alone, could do it him/herself.--It seems quite safe and serves its purpose well. This is my favorite part really - that it is SAFE and stable and keeps him from falling out.Cons:--You need a decent amount of room from floor to top of boxspring (I think another reviewer said 18 inches?) in order to be able to have this flush against the side when lowered. We don't. So it doesn't go flat to the floor, but stays on an angle. As another reviewer note, when like that it makes a "ladder" for the child to get to the bed. I don't like that - I don't want him climbing on the thing at all, so I mostly leave it up now. I lower it mostly when tucking sheets. Disappointing - I loved that it could be left down, but that's a fault of my bed, NOT of the rail.--We found it a tad bit confusing as to how to properly tighten the anchor thing. In fairness, it had been a long day and maybe if we were "fresh" it would've been like "ohhhhh duhh!" or something. Putting it together was a snap, but we hassled with the anchor thing a bit. Got it, though (it's really NOT hard) and now it's nice and sturdy. I also agree with the other reviewers in that you really SHOULD use that middle bar. We have a rather low mattress and that bar falls JUST below it. So we lucked out in that the bar isn't against him in any way.--One nit-picky thing, but one that I think the company really needs to look at, is that after just a week, the mesh in the top corner is sort of slightly bubbled out from my 3 year old putting his foot there. Seems like it should be stronger or better held inside or something. Now don't misunderstand, it's not ripped, it's not way out, it's just not totally smooth in that area anymore. Again, seems like mine can't be the only kid who puts their foot on it, or elbow, or whatever. (That, primarily, is the reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars, by the way.)That's kind of it I think. Works as it should - goes on relatively easily - looks nice - most of all seems super safe. That last bit is all that really matters.

Happy Toddler Sleeping

Our two and a half year old grand daughter took one look at her new sleep-over bed, squealed with delight, fell backwards on it and rolled around giggling. We like the feature that the inside mattress is separately inflated from the outside support mattress. Tucking in a sheet is very easy and it stays tucked all night. The curved sides were sufficient to keep her from rolling out or turning her typical "180 degree" flip-flop in the night. Good length and width to accommodate growing child until about age 5. Mattress comes with the electric air pump (will be useful for inflating her little pool) and mattress did not lose air over night. The only minor thing was that it took several hours for the outside mattress to deflate enough to fold it back up, and the carrying back was too small to get mattress, mattress cover and air pump back in it. We used a spare larger draw string laundry bag and it worked fine. We would absolutely recommend this Shrunks inflatable mattress.

The cover, which was "free", is a plastic-like covering...similar to what you would cover your outdoor furniture with. I don't quite get it. It covers the soft top part of the actual mattress--which would keep your child from sliding all around. I didn't use it and if it weren't free, I'd get my money back. Don't waste your money-it's not necessary!
